Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Accelerator Lights came into being about seven years ago. Dental science researchers found that the chemical reaction of hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching gels could be drastically sped up when high-intensity light energy in the 480-520 nanometer wavelengths was directed on the gel that was applied to patients’ teeth. These wavelengths correspond to visible spectrum light in the blue-green color range. The light energy applied to the gel causes a much more rapid breakdown of the peroxide into its constituent parts, specifically free oxygen radicals. It is these radicals that actually perform the bleaching process, so it was shown that if the light was sufficiently powerful enough (measured in total watts or milliwatts/cm.²) and closest within the active wavelength band of energy, the faster this reaction would occur.
